Suppose you have better content, which it probably is. In that case, you can quickly use this

How to measure ROI, or return on investment in a link-building campaign. As far as I know, link builders can’t calculate the return on investment (ROI). Some people claim it is possible.
Any business owner knows that marketing is essential for driving growth. But with so many different options available, knowing where to invest your limited resources can be challenging. One area that is often overlooked is link building. Link building can be a great way to improve search engine rankings and drive traffic to your website. But how do you check if it’s working or not? The key is to measure ROI. Here are a few tips:
1. Set realistic goals. What do you want to achieve with link building? More traffic? Better search engine rankings? Make sure your goals are specific and measurable.
2. Track your progress. Use the free Google Analytics or another similar tool to track the performance of your link-building campaign. This will help you see what is working and what’s not.
3. Calculate the ROI. There are several different formulas you can use to calculate ROI. But at its simplest, you need to divide the cost of your link-building campaign by the results you achieved. This will also give you a clear conclusion of whether or not link building is worth your time and money.
Link Building Results: The Difficulty in Measuring
Most people assume that building links is only about getting links. But sales is the real goal behind link building.
Links are not the end goal, and links are a tool to reach the end goal of sales.

Viral links, when content is created around a specific stunt, typically result in a large number of links when done successfully.
But, these links don’t relate directly to the topic or the goal of creating sales.
A stunt content example is when a business has created a “world’s greatest” or the “world’s ugliest” activity or event. The viral stunt content makes links unrelated to the company, which almost always results in no ranking lift since the links are off-topic.
Failure to measure success by focusing on the number of links will not be a good indicator. A measure of link-building success is how many sales have increased since the link-building activities began.
To create ROI through link building, we must focus on sales. Sales is the “Return” referenced in “Return of Investment.”
Google is a Black Box
How can a person be sure that a link, twenty links, or one hundred links are responsible for changing rankings?
We see what is found (in search results), but what causes it? We can’t say that a particular link has a specific outcome.
Unless you’ve only created one link, the one link can cause an increase in sales.
Although it is impossible to correlate a set of links with something like pay-per-view accuracy, there are still options for giving attribution.
You can also build links to increase your site’s ranking. The ROI of a site ranking at that point is likely to be poor, as sales haven’t caught up to the cost of buying those links.
After a certain point, however, the equation changes. If you pay more to get those links (and content), your ROI begins to shift in favor of the link-builder. As sales keep coming in, your ROI gets better.

In my opinion, I can’t directly attribute which links contributed to the movement of rankings.
You can assume that because sales were improved after links were made, there is a strong correlation.
Although not an exact science, it can be estimated.

Analytics programs can track bounce rate, new visitors, site time, etc. These metrics enable you to determine how much traffic your links receive.
Advanced segmentation options can help you leverage data on the types of visitors to your site. These include demographics, first visit date and age.
Knowing which links send certain types of people or traffic is a significant advantage for you when pitching content that is topically targeted in the future.
A link campaign’s ROI can be established using referral data to your advantage.
You may assess the effectiveness of link building using these measures.

Unique Root Domains or Total Backlinks?
After earning your most recent link, you should verify whether the connection originated from a unique root domain.
A unique root domain indicates that the link you just got was from a website that has never linked to it before.
And that is extremely valuable.
Google treats every backlink from your website like a testimonial. Google decides whether or not to buy your site (read rank).
Google might notice that you have 15 testimonials for the same person (read Root Domain), but it is far less convincing than 15 testimonials from different people.
Your link profile should be small yet contain links from the same source. Diversification and diversification are key.
94% of the backlinks to all content online are absent.
You won’t be harmed by a few backlinks coming from the same root domain.
However, if it is, all you can do is expand your network and be proactive in building link relationships to diversify the profile.
The better the quality of your links, you will get from more domains.
Domain Authority / Domain rating – Vanity Metric
Domain Rating (a term via Ahrefs), Domain Authority – a period using Moz), Authority Score – a period via SEMrush.
Although they are called differently, they are still essentially the same thing.
An overall score of 0-100 is based on multiple factors: unique backlinks, total backlinks, and the relative authority each backlink has.
As stated, a site with a high domain rating has many excellent links from many other great sites. A lower domain rating means the site has fewer unique links.
Is it a vanity measurement?
To a degree, yes.
Do you think it matters? Absolutely.
Do you see any SERPs for competitive keywords? Tell me not:
Nearly everyone ranked for “international SEO” has a D above 90.
Domain rating is more than a vanity calculation.
Google does not use it directly, but it now indicates what Google trusts. It shows sites with healthy, diverse backlinks and is creating great content.
These are authoritative sites that people trust and use to source information.
It can hugely benefit your site’s trust signal and DR by gaining a link from a significant place with a domain score of 90+.
With years of link-building experience for hundreds of clients from all niches, I can tell you that non-spammy links more significant than 50 in Ahrefs Domain Ratio can substantially impact your trust and authority.
However, DA/DR/AS does not necessarily represent the end-all-be-all metric.
Don’t let it discourage you if the domain rating is 55.
You’d be pleasantly shocked at how strong a DR55-site can be.
Strong enough for Alexa, SEMrush and Search Engine Journal to outrank if the content is good enough.
Spam Scores, How High Is It Too High?
Moz has coined Spam Score as “the percentage site with similar features we found to be punished or banned by Google”.
Spam scores, link building, and link building are topics that are frequently brought up.
Unfortunately, that is not true.
Straight from Moz smooth:
“Well-established links, even with higher Spam Scores, can still add credibility and value to your website.”
While it is evident that having a spammy link profile is terrible, some sites with high spam scores are not.
Moz sets these guidelines:
- Low: 1-30%
- Medium = 31-60%
- 61-100% = Excellent
A mix of all these scores is almost guaranteed.
Your optimization goals should include a majority of low, some moderate, and a few high links.
It doesn’t mean you should immediately disavow high spam scores. Instead, you should consider it case-by-case.
Ask yourself these questions when you look at a link with a higher spam score.
- Is this website actual? Is this a scam PBN or spam-building link?
- Is this the right piece of content? Or is it jam-packed with exact match anchors for hundreds of other sites?
- Is it contextually relevant? Or is it a massive directory of random links that don’t have any relevance at all?
It’s easy enough to know if an inbound link is spammy. Even though the spam scores are visible, they may not be enough to tell you.
Does Organic Traffic Matter?
Organic traffic is an excellent way to measure the value and importance of a backlink.
We depend upon the source (SEMrush/Ahrefs, SimilarWeb, etc. There are many methods to estimate organic traffic.
Why? These are estimations of clicks, and they do not come directly from Google Analytics.
Ahrefs allows you to determine if your website receives enough organic traffic quickly.
To verify, you can click on the Keyword Report to see which keywords are ranking:
If keywords are popular and rank well on the first webpage, they could have great organic visitors each month.
The objective is to acquire links from websites that receive a lot of organic traffic.
Any traffic above 1,000 is a great start and can go even higher.
The better quality organic traffic (keywords relevant) will result in more conversions. Look at the keyword profile to determine what the site ranks for. If they rank well, click their content and click your link to convert.
It is unlikely that organic traffic to a page linked to by you will directly impact your keyword rankings.
It will still drive organic referral traffic, which can be a big plus for your website’s ranking.
One of my biggest concerns in link building is anchor text. Half of the crowd desires exact match anchors for keyword rankings. The other half wants “natural anchors” to avoid Google penalties.
So who is right then?
Both are. Link building doesn’t have to be one or two. It’s less about getting all DR90 hyperlinks and more about finding a balanced approach.
It’s not natural to try and do too much in one or more of these areas.
If a small website has one blog post, but 100 links have an exact match anchor, then something is wrong.
However, it would be fantastic if 100 links were obtained from a survey you conducted, and the anchors varied from image and statistic citations to quotes from the article and other exact matches.
This indicates that the links were created naturally and not artificially by gaming.
A natural-looking link profile should include both exact match anchors.
Competitor Analysis. Creating a backlink gap
For many reasons, the backlinks you receive that your competitors don’t possess are precious.
- It is a way to build trust in your niche and establish authority instead of allowing others to benefit.
- You generate more direct referral traffic to your site than your competitors.
- Each additional link you gain increases control and distinguishes you from your peers.
Every time you acquire a hyperlink, put your domain in a Link Intersect account:
This will let you know who links you to you and not your competition.
If the root domain links directly to you and your competition, the link value is higher (all things being equal).
This is an excellent win if they’re linking to you as well. Why? You closed the backlink gap left by your competitor.
Through your outreach emails and each link you acquire, you should strive to build a more significant backlink gap that increases your domain authority.
Mentioning context is essential.
All of the above factors are very important. But it is essential to remember the context. It is essential to consider the context when I refer to your link.
Also, how well-written was the article you mentioned? Is it a 500-word piece that will never rank on the SERPs? Or is this a 5,000-word ultimate guide for overthrowing giants in the SERPs
Was the topic on which you were quoted directly related? Or was your keyword anchor too long and out-of-place?
Were 150 other people linked to you, or only a few outbound ones?
Was the content distributed to a social platform driving direct engagement and compounding hyperlinks?
I could continue. The context is essential, and it’s less valuable if you get mentions of crappy articles from sites with poor context.
Examine the article that featured your brand or linked back to you. You have a great link if the article is compelling, topically pertinent, and fascinating.
